Everyone’s Talking About Productivity. What Leaders Need is Leverage
There’s mounting pressure across industries to get more done with less. Use AI. Automate more. Streamline. Move faster... All good things — but some days it’s enough to make me yearn for the simplicity of a rotary phone! ☎️
Here’s the trap:
We’re teaching leaders to become more productive without teaching them a system to let go.
So they write the email faster, analyze the information faster, and move through their task list faster. But they’re still the person everyone comes to with questions. Still jumping in when something goes sideways. Still carrying work and decisions their team could own.
They’ve become incredibly efficient at doing too much. And no amount of AI, productivity training, or process improvement fixes that if the leader never learns how to transfer work, decision-making, and ownership.
That’s not a productivity problem. It’s a leadership development problem.
LEADERSHIP REFRAME
Here’s the tricky part: the behaviors that make someone a great individual contributor are often the exact behaviors they have to loosen their grip on as a leader. They got promoted because they knew the answer. Fixed the problem. Saved the client. Caught the mistake. Got the work across the finish line. 💪
Being the hero worked — until their job became developing other people who could do those things without them.
That’s where capable leaders get stuck. They’re still solving when they should be coaching, deciding when someone else could own the decision, and jumping in when the work gets uncomfortable. From the outside, it can look like a productivity problem.
It usually isn’t. It’s a leadership behavior problem.
The shift is guiding them from: "How much can I get done," to: "How effectively can I create the conditions for other people to get results?"
That takes more than telling someone to “delegate more.” Leaders have to learn how to transfer real ownership, give people enough clarity and authority to succeed, stay out of the work without becoming disconnected, and coach through mistakes instead of taking the work back.
💡 Delegation isn’t a personality trait. It’s a leadership capability.
Most leaders already know they should delegate. The real work is helping them understand why they keep holding on, where ownership keeps flowing back to them, and what behaviors have to change so they can actually let go.
NOTICE THIS WEEK
Think about the leaders you develop, coach, train, or support. Who is constantly busy? Who has become the answer person? Who gets pulled into problems their team should increasingly be able to solve? Who routinely says some version of, “It’s just easier if I do it”?
And especially: Who is really good at their job — but hasn’t yet learned how to stop being the person who does so much of the work?
Now ask yourself one more question: Does your leadership development approach actually teach them how to change that behavior?
Because the goal isn't simply to help leaders become faster. It’s to help them become leaders who know how to let go.
TRY THIS
If developing leaders is part of your role — whether you work in L&D, HR, consulting, coaching, or leadership development — our October Let It Go Advisor (LIGA) certification program will give you a proven framework for helping leaders build this skill.
You’ll learn how to identify the delegation patterns keeping leaders stuck, diagnose where breakdowns are happening, and guide leaders through a practical process for transferring work and ownership more effectively.
And you’ll leave with tools and frameworks you can actually use in the leadership development work you’re already doing. ⤵️
The certification program is eligible for 10 SHRM PDCs and ATD CPTD/APTD recertification credits.
