Growth Starts Below The Surface
One of the things I’ve learned growing lavender is that healthy growth starts long before you see the reward of the blooms.
Young lavender needs to be pruned early and consistently. It can feel counterintuitive to cut back a plant you’re trying to grow, but doing so encourages strong roots and helps prevent the plant from becoming woody and difficult to reshape later.
It’s a good reminder that growth isn’t always about adding more.
LEADERSHIP REFRAME
I see a version of this all the time with developing leaders.
We give people more responsibility, bigger teams and increasingly complex goals—and expect their leadership habits to grow right along with them. But without intentional development, old patterns can become deeply rooted.
Leaders keep making decisions their teams could make. They jump in when something isn’t moving fast enough, or they hold onto work because handing it off feels harder in the moment. And their teams learn, often unintentionally, to keep looking upward for answers. Over time, those patterns become harder to reshape.
Just like lavender, strong leadership growth requires some shaping along the way.
Are leaders clear about what they should own—and what they shouldn’t? Do they know how to transfer true ownership rather than simply assign tasks? Are they building confidence and decision-making capability in the people around them? Is delegation being reinforced as a leadership behavior across the organization?
The earlier those habits are developed, the stronger the foundation becomes.
NOTICE THIS WEEK
Think about the leaders you’re developing across your organization.
Ask: “What leadership habit are we allowing to take root now that will be much harder to change later?”
It could be over-involvement, rescuing, holding onto decisions, unclear accountability—or simply never having been taught how to delegate well. Leadership development isn’t only about preparing people for what comes next.
It’s also about shaping the habits they’ll carry with them when they get there.
TRY THIS
Delegation is one of those foundational leadership capabilities—and it becomes much more powerful when there are people inside the organization equipped to teach and reinforce it.
That’s exactly what our Let It Go Certified Advisor (LIGA) program is designed to do.
LIGA equips internal L&D leaders, coaches and practitioners with the framework, tools and language to teach effective delegation and help those behaviors cascade across the organization.
Our next cohort begins this fall.
If you’re looking for a practical way to strengthen leadership capability from the inside out—or you want to become the person who leads that work—I’d love to have you join us.
Because sustainable leadership growth isn’t just about giving people more responsibility.
It’s about helping them grow the right habits underneath it.
Helping you lead with less,
